2004 Torchbearer Awards

The second Torchbearer Awards was held on the 20th of May 2004.  Awards were presented to two torchbearers for free and open trade, the Right Honorable James B. Bolger of New Zealand and  the Honorable Calvin M. Dooley of the United States

The Master of Ceremonies was Dr. Peter Watson, Chairman of the U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corporation, and the luncheon was sponsored by International Paper, whose continued support is greatly valued.

Rt. Hon. James Bolger was prime minister of New Zealand from 1990 to 1997 and Ambassador to the United States from 1998 to 2002. As prime minister, Mr. Bolger oversaw unprecedented performance in the New Zealand economy. In addition, he encouraged New Zealand’s involvement in the international arena, especially U.N. peacekeeping operations. Currently, Mr. Bolger is Chairman of Kiwi Bank and New Zealand Post.

 

Hon. Calvin Dooley has represented California’s Central Valley  in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1991. Before his election to Congress, Mr. Dooley was a farmer, growing cotton and walnuts. He has been a very active promoter of agricultural and trade issues in the House.  Representative Dooley co-founded and chaired the New Democrat Coalition, an organization devoted to electing moderate Democrats.
