Wellington Declaration
The Wellington Declaration was signed on 5 November 2010 by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully. The US-NZ "strategic partnership" it describes, symbolizes the vast improvement in the relationship and the beginning of a new chapter of even greater cooperation. The partnership has two fundamental elements: practical cooperation in the Pacific region and "enhanced political and subject-matter dialogue- including regular Foreign Ministers' meetings and political-military discussions." Among the issues on which two countries will cooperate are climate change, renewable energy initiatives, disaster recovery, nuclear proliferation, extremism, trade, security, and sustainable economic development across the region. The goal is "a partnership for the 21st century that is flexible, dynamic and reflects our fundamental beliefs and aspirations."
